ÉALÚ-AER Workshop in Shannon

In a step towards fostering collaboration and enhancing project understanding, ÉALÚ-AER project team run a workshop with several stakeholders from the Shannon Airport Group, Air Traffic Control of the Shannon Airport amongst others. The visit included a comprehensive exploration of the FMCI Advanced Air Mobility and the Air Traffic Control (ATC) tower of Shannon Airport.

The Collins Aerospace team, integral to the ÉALÚ-AER project since the kick-off meeting, seized the opportunity to visit the project test environment, specifically designed for drone activities. This immersive experience provided a deep dive into the innovative world of Advanced Air Mobility, offering valuable insights for the aerospace experts.

The tour aimed at bridging the gap between theoretical project discussions and practical on-site operations. By exposing the Collins Aerospace team to the nuances of the ÉALÚ-AER test environment, the collaboration seeks to strengthen communication and coordination, ultimately contributing to the project success. More importantly, as Collins Aerospace team is driving most of the technical work package of the project and definitions of the validation use-cases, it made sense to bring the team onsite.
The ÉALÚ-AER project focuses on advancing drone capabilities by implementing U-space services in Shannon. This collaborative effort is a testament to the commitment of the project consortium to push the boundaries of air mobility and shape the future of unmanned aerial systems.

The workshop not only facilitated knowledge transfer but also allowed for a more holistic understanding of the project’s scope and objectives. This was also an opportunity for AirNav Ireland (formerly the Air Navigation Services of the Irish Aviation Authority) to understand more the project requirements for enabling U-space services and how this interferes with the ATCO’s day-to-day operations. Engagement with Air Traffic Controllers in duty was beneficial for FMCI as well as Collins Aerospace team to share some insightful thoughts on the collaboration between the project team and the ATC.

ÉALÚ-AER is one of the first European Digital Sky Demonstrators to focus on U-space and Urban Air Mobility as part of the European ATM Master Plan designed by the SESAR Joint Undertaking (JU). SESAR JU aims at accelerating through research and innovation the delivery of an inclusive, resilient, and sustainable Digital European Sky.

 

Digital Sky Demonstrators, such as ÉALÚ-AER, are high-level Technology Readiness Level (TRL 7-8) projects that are funded in collaboration with the European Climate, Infrastructure and Environment Executive Agency (CINEA) under the Connected Europe Facility (CEF) funding instrument.

ÉALÚ-AER partners include: FMCI (cooridnator), Collins Aerospace, The Shannon Airport Group, Avtrain, DeepBlue, Manna, AirNav Ireland and Spright.
