Projects – CAMINO-2

CAMINO-2

Funded by Interreg NWE

CAMINO-2 aims to enable the implementation of Shared Automated Vehicles (SAVs) by creating shared planning frameworks, developing implementation toolkits, and building training programmes to support technology adoption.

Context

CAMINO-2 (Scaling shared automated vehicles for sustainable and resilient public transport in North-West Europe) is a newly approved Interreg North-West Europe project that brings together 10 leading partners across all seven NWE regions to accelerate the real-world deployment of Shared Automated Vehicles (SAVs). Building on the strategic foundations of the previous CAMINO project, CAMINO-2 directly addresses the growing challenges faced by public transport authorities and operators, including rising operational costs, driver shortages, and declining service viability in rural and functional urban areas.

While SAVs present a flexible, low-emission solution to these challenges, their adoption across Europe remains limited due to fragmented regulatory frameworks, outdated public-private partnership models, and insufficient organisational capacity. CAMINO-2 seeks to bridge this critical gap between strategy and implementation by providing practical tools, validated methodologies, and real-world evidence to support scalable SAV deployment.

Through a strong transnational collaboration, the project will validate SAV technologies and operational models across diverse European contexts, ensuring that solutions are adaptable, user-centric, and aligned with the needs of both urban and rural mobility systems. The project has been formally approved for funding by the Interreg NWE Monitoring Committee in November 2025.

Aim

The core objective of CAMINO-2 is to enable the large-scale adoption of Shared Automated Vehicles by translating strategic ambition into practical, deployable solutions for public transport authorities and operators across North-West Europe.

The project will:

  • Co-develop a SAV Blueprint Action Plan (BAP), providing a flexible and transferable planning framework for regional deployment
  • Validate SAV solutions through four transnational Living Labs, testing technologies, operational models, and public-private partnerships across metropolitan, suburban, and rural environments
  • Develop a SAV Implementation Toolkit (SAV-IT), offering practical guidance on procurement, operations, governance, and regulatory navigation
  • Build capacity and scale adoption through an Ambassador Programme, training external organisations and creating regional multipliers to drive uptake across at least 45 organisations

Through these actions, CAMINO-2 aims to deliver scalable, citizen-centric, and low-emission mobility solutions, strengthening the resilience and sustainability of public transport systems across Europe.
