Future Mobility Campus Ireland (FMCI) is proud to announce our participation in the commemorative time capsule at Shannon Airport. This initiative, led by the Shannon Airport Group, marks the 80th anniversary of transatlantic flight to Shannon. The time capsule captures a snapshot of innovation, transport and community life in 2025.
Preserving 2025 for the Future: Shannon Airport’s Time Capsule Project
This year marks a milestone for Shannon Airport and the wider region’s aviation legacy: 80 years since the first scheduled transatlantic passenger flight in October 1945. The time capsule, set to be opened in 80 years’ time, honours the region’s proud aviation history, highlights the present current in aviation innovation, and casts a hopeful glance into Shannon’s continued future as an aviation leader.
The time capsule gathers contributions from local schools, community groups, and pioneering businesses to preserve present-day life and make bold predictions for Shannon’s future. The project invited submissions ranging from drawings of driverless cars and AI-generated self-portraits to reflections on inclusive journeys and our changing transport landscape. By sealing these voices and ideas now, we take a direct look ahead toward 2105, giving future generations both a window into our world and a challenge to build onward.
FMCI: Driving Future Mobility from Shannon
FMCI was honoured to be invited to contribute to this project. Our testbed has emerged as Ireland’s leading mobility innovation campus research facility, advancing next-generation transport systems across land and air. Located in the Shannon Free Zone, FMCI provides the infrastructure for connected and autonomous vehicles, smart city testbeds, advanced air mobility solutions and digital-twin simulation environments—actively building the mobility systems we hope will be commonplace by 2105.
Our participation in the time capsule underscores FMCI’s mission: to help shape the sustainable, intelligent, and inclusive mobility of tomorrow. By contributing to Shannon’s legacy and future-facing infrastructure, we join a community of innovators pointing toward transformative transport systems.
A Message to 2105: FMCI’s Vision for the Next Era of Mobility
We’re entrusting something special to 2105. Our message, sealed within the capsule, speaks to the innovations underway at FMCI and the vision we hold for decades to come. While the full contents remain a secret until the capsule is reopened, here is a preview of what you’ll find hidden beneath Shannon’s soil:
An outline of how we’re accelerating electric vehicle deployment, autonomous systems, and connected infrastructure across the Shannon region and beyond.
A record of pilot projects in advanced air mobility, drone operations, smart road networks, and digital twins, all part of FMCI’s real-world testbed environment.
A wish that the transport and mobility systems we’re building today have delivered cleaner air, safer journeys, and greater connectivity for every community come 2105.
Shannon Airport Group’s time capsule initiative invites us to reflect on how far mobility has already transformed and to imagine how far it will go. At FMCI we believe that today’s trials are tomorrow’s standards, and there is no time like the present to build the future we want. We look forward to the day when future readers open this capsule and see just how our seeds of innovation grew.
