Next-Generation Vertiport
Funded by Enterprise Ireland via the Regional Enterprise Innovation Scoping Scheme 2022.
This study explored the need, feasibility, and benefits of investing in Innovative Air Mobility in Ireland. It considered the country’s current mobility habits, the potential benefits of incorporating advanced air mobility solutions, and the role that FMCI’s advanced infrastructure could play in advancing the industry for a smarter, more efficient, and more sustainable future.
Context
The main purpose of the Regional Enterprise Innovation Scoping Scheme 2022 (REISS) is the investigation and preparation of major new collaborative and innovative initiatives. The latter are funded for their potential to make a significant impact on enterprise development in a region, across regions, or nationally.
Advanced Air Mobility is the next phase of innovation for the aviation sector, with the AAM global market size projected to reach $133.5B by 2026. The establishment of a large-scale research and innovation hub for Advanced Air Mobility beside Shannon Airport will act as a stimulus in the region, supporting sustainable air mobility. FMCI can provide the ensuing industry cluster with infrastructure and other regional benefits such as collaborations with world-class Universities and Research Performing Organizations.
Aim
This project aims to create a large-scale research and innovation hub for Advanced Air Mobility building on the capabilities of FMCI’s current testbed. Due to the large opportunity for Ireland and its aviation industry, Ireland requires a large-scale vertiport and drone testing facility to support both new and existing companies transition to sustainable aviation.
The rollout of FMCI Air services will be phased, starting with a Proof-of-Concept operation in Q3 2021; followed by the proposed establishment of permanent cargo drone operations; followed by the establishment of Air Taxi operations. All these operations rely on AAM vehicles which are autonomous, pilotless and electric, hence at the cutting-edge of sustainable technology. The foreseen benefits include attracting investment, jobs, and growth to both Shannon and Ireland as a whole.
